Spiros Kritikos
(1960)

Spiros Kritikos was born in Aegion, Greece in 1960. He first studied Byzantine hagiography at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Yannis Vassilopoulos. He continued his studies on painting at the same school under the artists Yannis Moralis and Dimitris Mytaras and also studied History of Art under Marina Lambraki-Plaka.

Under a scholarship of the Athens School of Fine Arts he went to Paris to continue his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts having as teahers the artists Vladimir Velicovic and Henri Cueco, and also at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs with the artist Denis Rival.

His first solo exhibition was held in Athens in 1989 at the Cultural Center Ora. Many solo and group exhibitions followed in Greece and abroad. Three major solo exhibitions have been held at Mihalarias Art Gallery in Athens, from 1996 to 2002. His works have been included and exhibited at the Fryssiras Cllection, the Pierides Pinacotheque, the Municipal Cultural Center of Athens, the Municipal Gallery of Rhodes, the Hydra Cultural Center, and theMuseum of the post Byzantine Art in Zakynthos, Greece.

His work is characterized by a figurative aspect and an harmony related to optical illusion, while at the same time his influence by Byzantine Hagiography and Flemish painting is apparent. These influences are always connected to the greek element while his subject matter includes still lives, musical instruments of the past, manuscripts, greek traditional ships and various objects. These are always depicted with an impressive vivid color realism, in a rich context, a detailed drawing and a special effort to create patinas and textures in the surfaces and backgrounds.
